Alappuzha is home to several famous temples and churches. The temple festival at Ambalappuzha is particularly impressive. Chettikulangara Bharani festival (Feb-Mar) is also very popular. The Arthunkal Perunnal, the feast of St Sebastian and the feast of St. George at Edathua is also very popular and attended by non-Christians too.
Boat Races: Criss-crossed by backwaters, Alappuzha is also the place to watch boat races. Nehru Trophy Boat Race held in the second Saturday of August in Punnamada lake. Sree Narayana Jayanthi Vallam Kali at Kumarakom held during Onam feastival. Champakulam Moolam Boat Race, the oldest and most popular, held during Moolam day of the Malayalam month of Midhunam (Jun-Jul).
