Gulmarg

Gulmarg's beauty, location and proximity to Srinagar makes it one of the foremost hill stations in the country. Originally called Gaurimarg, Sultan Yusuf Shah gave its present name in the 16th century.

Gulmarg was a favorite hangout of Mughal emperor Jahangir. So great was the Mughal emperor’s fascination for the land and its beauty that he once collected 21 different types of flowers from Gulmarg.

Gulmarg is not just a mountain resort which boasts of exceptional beauty. It also has other claims to fame. It has the highest golf course in the world. Gulmarg also has the country's premier ski resort which has earned it the sobriquet ‘heartland of winter sports in India’.

History

Gulmarg was a favourite vacation spot since mediaval times. Mughal emperor Jahangir used to visit the place frequently. It was earlier called Gaurimarg, which referred to Lord Shiva’s consort Parvati. Yousuf Shah Chak is believed to have changed its name to Gulmarg, meaning the garden of roses.

Gulmarg is one of the state’s most visited destinations. Gulmarg does not have any permanent residents. Only hotel employees and guests reside in Gulmarg. Curfew imposed by security forces requires everyone to leave the village by sunset.

Best time to visit

Gulmarg can be visited all through the year. November to February is ideal for skiing and other adventure sports. Summer from May to September remains pleasant and attracts large number of tourists.
