Muzhappilangad Beach is one of the longest in Kerala and the most popular beach in the Malabar region of the state. Muzhappilangad in Kannur district, is considered the only drive-in beach in all of Asia.
The eight km long Thikkodi beach, about 46 km away from Muzhappilangad, is also considered a drivable beach.
The beach is popular among motorists to hone their motor driving skills as the beach provides good traction unlike other beaches where driving is very tricky and it isn’t as hard as asphalted roads. The entire stretch of the beach is open for drivers.
Muzhappilangad is a quiet beach without shops or vendors that impede movement. A drive on the beach is a wonderful experience. The beach is a paradise for walkers. During low-tide you can walk to Dharmadam Island, about 100 metres off the shore. Do not forget to get the required permissions to enter Dharmadam Island as it is privately owned. During high tide, Dharmadam can’t be accessed on foot; however, the sight of the island during sunset is mesmerizing.
Black rocks bordering the beach act as a natural barrier and protects the beach from strong sea currents.
The beach festival held every year in April is a major attraction. It is one of the most popular events in the Kannur district.
