Nanded is famous for the Hazur Sahib Gurudwara, the place where tenth Sikh guru breathed his last.  A prominent Sikh pilgrimage, the town in Marathwada region of Maharashtra, attracts large number of pilgrims from across India and the world.

Nanded is the headquarters of Nanded district which shares borders with Andhra Pradesh in the east and Karnataka in the south. Nanded gets its name from Nandi Tat, a place on the banks of River Godavari. Nanded is about 270 km away from Hyderabad.

Hazur Sahib Gurudwara is the hub around which the town revolves. It was built at the site where the tenth guru passed away. The city also holds great religious importance as the birth place of famous Marathi saint-poets, Vaman Pandit, Taghunath Shesha and Vishnupant Shesha.

The town and surrounding areas has been of great strategic importance since mediaeval times. Nanded was part of the Mauryan Empire under the reign of King Ashoka (272 to 231 BC). Nanded Fort, situated about four km from the town centre, attracts lots of visitors for its garden and water works. The fort is surrounded by River Godavari on three sides. Kandhar fort, 53 km from Nanded, was among the first land forts to have a moat as a means of defence. The fort was designed and built by Rahstrakuta King Krishna III.

Nanded is a major hub for learning Sankrit and a famous centre of education in Maharashtra.

One of the Shaktipeeth in Maharashtra, the temple dedicated to Goddess Renuka Devi is situated near Mahur village close to Nanded. The temple is dedicated to Renuka, the mother of Lord Parshuram, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. A big fair is held in honour of Renukadevi on Dussehra.

There are lots of options when it comes to budget and mid-range hotels in Nanded. The budget hotels offer decent amenities and are at walking distance from the railway station. Mid-range hotels are situated close to the bus stand which offer slightly better amenities and have clean and spacious rooms. There are no luxury hotels in Nanded.

There are many options available when it comes to eating out in Nanded ranging from food stalls to restaurants serving international cuisines. Stalls selling street food can be found throughout the city and especially near the Bus Stand. Many restaurants are situated near the Airport Road.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Nanded is during September to December. Nanded gets hot summers and moderate rainfall and chilly winters.
