Described by Salim Ali, one of the best known ornithologists, as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India, the Thattekad bird sanctuary was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. It is popularly known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and is situated at the foot of Western Ghats. It expands over 25 km on the North side of Periyar River.
Guided tours of the sanctuary are organized by the forest authorities, which are conducted at individual as well as group levels. Trekking through the preserved forest is restricted to a particular area. The area which is allotted especially for the purpose of trekking is quite mesmerizing. While trekking through the forests, you will come across a large variety of exotic and rare birds.
