Situated on the banks of river Yamuna, Agra evokes memories of romance, splendour and extravagance. Agra finds first mention in the epic Mahabharat as Agravan. The second century Roman geographer Ptolemy marked it as Agra on the world map.
Sultan Sikandar Lodi is generally accepted to have founded it in the year 1504. However, the golden age of Agra began with Mughals after 1526. It was the capital of the Mughal empire under Emperor Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The city’s significance as a political centre ended when the capital was transferred to Delhi by Shah Jahan.
With its illustrious past, the city figures on the itinerary of every tourist visiting India. Organized by Uttar Pradesh Tourism, the Mahotsav, started in year 1992, is aimed at providing boost to tourism and also enlightening tourists about India’s culture and heritage.
